6 Booths not to miss at Frieze Art Fair at The Shed in New York City

By Valeria Lay-Bernal

With 68 international exhibitors, Frieze New York is now hosting its twelfth edition through May 5th at The Shed. Representing the finest in contemporary art, Frieze is blending the authenticity of New York City’s art scene with a truly global perspective. Last year’s edition was filled with impactful sales and works across booths, from Michael Rosenfeld Gallery “1973” to Jack Whitten’s solo exhibit at Hauser & Wirth. This year will be no different.

Kukje Gallery– Hague Yang

Kukje Gallery presents Hague Yang’s solo exhibition— “Mesmerizing Mesh” (2021—) for the
first time in the United States. The Berlin-based and Seoul born artist embraces a multimedia
approach that engages everything from the sensory to psychological, political and emotional. This exhibition plays on the shamanistic ritual of blowing a soul into a fragile material form, expressed by bright forms that touch on spiritual desire and intercession, layed over hanji, or mulberry bark paper. More recently she has begun to translate these experiments to three-dimensional forms.

Tomio Kayama– Hiroshi Sugito

Recognized as a vital point of introduction for young Japanese artists, Tokyo based Tomio
Koyama Gallery brings the solo exhibit of Hiroshi Sugito to Frieze New York. Studying under
Yoshimoto Nara, Sugito developed his own style of Nihonga painting that centers around objects and natural elements, rather than traditional scenic imagery. For this exhibit, Sugito has reworked his own drafts from the 90’s introducing them to the market for the first time. His semi-abstract style creates textural and playful works that still manage to evoke a sense of serenity and tradition characteristic of the genre.

Pace Gallery– Robert Marigold & Arlene Sechet
Not too far away from Yang’s spiritually driven exhibit is Pace Gallery’s dual exhibit of Robert Marigold and Arlene Sechet Despite the abstract nature of their respective oeuvres, Sechet’s sculptures are juxtaposed with Mangold’s paintings, exploring the contrast between constancy and dynamism, symmetry and asymmetry, expansion and contraction, and themes of the like. Their various experiments on abstraction use geometry, color, linge and space in various mediums to express these ideals, creating unlikely connections in the world of contemporary abstraction.
Holly Hendry @Stephen Friedman Gallery

Stephen Friedman Gallery– Holly Hendry
Stephen Friedman brings a new installation by Holly Hendry, exploring anatomical idiosyncrasies and relationship to the external human experience Hendry’s work takes inspiration from the human body, turning familiar structures inside out to reveal their underlying complexities. For her exhibition at Frieze New York she reimagines an office cubicle, covered with notes and to-do lists, exploring the human body’s connection with the workplace. There are also plays on medical diagnoses that involve involuntary bodily processes like blushing or sighing. Incorporating metal and glass elements, Hendry refers to the sculptures as “objects that appear to exist halfway between a paper note and an X-ray.”

FOCUS
Matthew Brown– Hayley Tompkins

Dedicated to the solo presentations of emerging artists, curator Lumi Tan has gathered a selection of 11 artists and galleries who innovate and redefine artistic notions through their work. Glasgow native Hayley Tompkins debuts her first solo art fair presentation in over 25 years at Matthew Brown in this year’s Focus group. As a critically acclaimed member of the UK avant-garde scene, Tompkins’ multidisciplinary work explores the relationships, gaps and central points of nature between the self, objects, and space. Her brushstrokes are filled with density and emotion building multilayered acrylic paintings on canvas which convey the energy and feeling of her artistic process.

Davi de Jesus do Nascimento @Mitre Galeria

Mitre Galeria– Davi de Jesus do Nascimento
